Liz Taylor's jewels, fashion set for December auctions

(Reuters Life!) - Actress Elizabeth Taylor's renowned collection of jewelry, works of art, fashion and memorabilia will be sold in a series of auctions starting in December, Christie's said on Wednesday.
Taylor, one of the last great stars from Hollywood's heyday who was known as much for her beauty, love of diamonds, eight marriages and work as an AIDS activist as her films, died of congestive heart failure in Los Angeles on March 23 at age 79.
Christie's said it will devote all its Rockefeller Center headquarters gallery space to an unprecedented, monumental 10-day exhibition of her collection beginning on December 3.
Before the sale a three-month worldwide tour of Taylor's jewelry, fashion, accessories, decorative arts and memorabilia will kick off in September, with stops in Moscow, London, Los Angeles, Dubai, Geneva, Paris, and Hong Kong.
Marc Porter, Christie's Americas chairman and president, said the exhibitions would provide "a window into the world of a true icon, a rare woman who was at once an international film and fashion star, loving mother, successful businesswoman, and generous humanitarian."
In keeping with Taylor's humanitarian work a portion of the proceeds from the exhibition admissions, events and publications related to the sales will be donated to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which the actress founded in 1991.
Christie's did not release details on specific items in the auction or estimates of what they would fetch but past sales of collections of other famous people have sold for many millions.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' estate fetched $35 million at Sotheby's in 1993, while a nine-day sale of property from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor soared to nearly $25 million.
The series of Taylor sales are individually devoted to jewelry, haute couture, fashion and accessories, decorative arts and memorabilia from Taylor's Bel Air home, and Impressionist and modern art.
Taylor's jewelry is expected to draw intense interest. Christie's described the sale as "one of the most remarkable jewelry events in auction history." A gala evening sale December 13 will be followed by two more sessions on December 14.
Taylor's jewelry was reportedly worth more than $100 million at her death. Her estate was valued at anywhere from $500 million to $1 billion.
All sales, except art which will be held in London in February, will take place in December in New York.
Christie's said it will also hold online-only sales through Christie's LIVE to run concurrent with the exhibition and sale dates.

Taylor’s jewels, clothes to go on world tour

NEW YORK — Elizabeth Taylor’s prized collection of jewelry, art, designer clothing and other memorabilia will go on an international three-month tour before it is sold in New York in December, Christie’s auction house announced Wednesday.
The tour will begin in September and include stops in Moscow, London, Dubai, Geneva, Paris, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. It will end in New York, where Christie’s plans a "museum-quality exhibition" of the late actress’s collection that will fill its entire gallery space Dec. 3-10. The auction will be held Dec. 13-16.
Taylor, who was infamously married eight times to seven husbands and remembered for her roles in Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, was also known for her passion for opulent diamonds. She died in March at age 79.
She published a book in 2003 titled Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry, and her collection has included some of the world’s most expensive stones.
A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition admissions and publications related to the sales will be donated to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
The screen icon’s impressionist and modern art collection will be sold February at Christie’s in London and will include a group of works she inherited from her father, art dealer Francis Taylor, Christie’s said.
The auction house said details of the sales, exhibitions and tour dates would be announced in the fall. But it said Taylor’s magnificent jewelry by some of the world’s top design houses will range from white diamonds to elaborate custom-designed jewels. They will be sold in three sessions Dec. 13-14.
Some of the biggest names in fashion, including Valentino, Gianni Versace and Gianfranco Ferre, designed the star’s haute couture and ready-to-wear fashion. Classic "Elizabeth Taylor looks" will be offered in an evening sale on Dec. 14, followed by three sessions of fashion, handbags, shoes, accessories and fine luggage the following day.

Invest in jewelry essentials

Most women really do love fashion jewelries and they buy a lot, such as necklace, bracelet, earring. But do you have the moment that you are wearing a little black dress but you don’t know which jewelries is the best match? I think the most answers maybe yes, because you have so many that you don’t know how to choose. Whether you’re a jewelry-lover or not, make sure you secure the basics first, before buying other trendy fashion jewelry. They’ll work with absolutely everything — from colors, color combinations to different styles. Here below is a list about your jewelry essentials.
1. Pearl Necklace
A pearl necklace complements your pearl studs if you want to reflect elegance, clarity and confidence. Choosing a perfect pearl necklace depends on many factors including age, skin color and occasion. Treat your pearls with care and they’ll grace many generations.
2. Cocktail Ring
The cocktail ring is an important eye-popping statement. Celebrities wear them as an instant boost of bling that works with almost any outfit. They are Classic and Timeless. But please remember if you have smaller hands- make sure the stone doesn’t extend past the bottom of your knuckles.
3. Diamond Stud Earrings
Few fashion accessories make as much of an impact as earrings. Timeless beauty, elegance, incomparable brilliance and versatility are some of the attributes of diamond studs, as perfect of a choice of any wardrobe item. But if real diamonds are too expensive for your budget, you might want to look at cubic Zirconia stud earrings instead. They have the same brilliance and quality as real diamonds, and prices start from 20$ and up.
4. Diamond Pendant Necklace
A beautiful diamond necklace is a sure fire way to draw some attention and adds sophistication and elegance to any type of clothing. Choose simple pendant shapes like circle, solitaire, marquise, pear and cube. Necklaces with longer lengths help to accentuate the bust while shorter lengths help to bring out the beautiful lines of her neck.
5. Simple Bracelet
Simple bracelet is an eye-catching accessory goes with a variety of elegant looks. You can choose a clean and classy bracelet design preferably without any fancy details like charms and beads if you want it to work with most of your outfits whether you suit silver more than gold or the opposite.
The above list is the basics of your jewelries. If you want to make yourself elegant, charming, attractive, please make full use of them. But maybe many people will say that will cost you too much. So I would advise you that you can buy them from internet jewelry shop. Most stores such as Fashion Jewellery Centre  offer wholesale jewelry, so you can buy all of these with wholesale price. Can’t wait? Just a few seconds, check your jewelry list first and invest in classic pieces of jewelry is highly suggested now.

Fashion Jewelry Knowledge

As we know, no women doesn’t like jewelry. When speaking to jewelry history, we must be back in ancient Egypt. Excavations by Howard Carter in 1922 led to the great discovery of   Tutankhamun’s tomb and many gold funerary artefacts, all showing the art work of ancient Egypt. Fashion jewelry is the best gift for woman from the ancient times. But in my opinion, I think fashion jewelry is one’s fashion ID card and allows you to differ your own unique fashion statement from other people. It reflects your own taste, style and even character. No matter what your style, fashion jewelry is the easiest way to perfect your special look. All women who want to be groomed should aim to have one set of fine quality estate type fashion jewelry of necklace or torque, and matching earrings, perhaps bracelet or bangle and a similar set in either silver, white gold or platinum.
Fashion jewelry includes many little items, from necklaces and bracelets to earrings, toe rings, pins and watches; from beaded chokers, necklaces and pendant necklaces to dangly charm bracelets, stretchy bracelets. So the best way to buy all jewelries you want is finding a reliable shop from the internet . The benefit of buying jewelries form internet store is that you can get the color, styles and materials to compliment anything you are wearing in wholesale jewelry price just in your home. Buy the way, fashion jewelry offers a much wider variety of choices than gold and silver. And different materials match different clothes. So before you buy, you’d better check your wardrobe first and get more knowledge about the fashion trends of this season and the next, choosing your own look to make sure what makes you special and unique.

We know , the most famous jewelry companies like Ciro, Adrian Buckley, Butler and Wilson, Swarovski Crystal Jewelry Napier, Joan Rivers, Joan Collins, Christian Dior, California Crystal, Property of A Lady and of course Kenneth J Lane. Yes, the jewelries from these companies are beautiful, but the price is also “beautiful”. So why not try to pay less and buy the same beautiful ones?

Are Fashion Bloggers The New Pornographers?

Naked Candice Swanepoel
Larry Flynt and the Rest of Us
I’ve never been one to criticize Hustler’s Larry Flynt, because at the end of the day, most of us will prostitute ourselves for page views. I guess the above is a business article?
Perhaps I sound erratic on Benjamin Kanarek Blog (BKBlog), criticizing Emmanuelle Alt for not being sensual enough and making the case that sexuality in marketing is spot on when done with class, sensitivity and brand relevance one day — and wondering out loud whether as bloggers and journalists, we have any codes of proper use of nudity on websites the next.
Questions
Are we filtering these articles and images for the search engines (AOC does religiously) or are we just saying f*** it? We all know sex generates Page Views, but I see some fashion bloggers/trendmeisters upping the ante big time the last few weeks.
Gone is the word ‘nudity’ in an advance warming, fewer nsfw, screen captures from videos that take a fashion brand moment on the runway and make it a voyeuristic come-on for page views.
Our use of nudity is not only filtered for the search engines. We advise in advance with a warning, and almost never open with nudity in the two images that comprise the excerpt. We will never use a naked body or nipples for the website lead without an extraordinarily good reason.
The only one that comes to mind was Eniko on NOWNESS because every image involved nudity and selling prestige jewelry, the images were too important to ignore.
Eniko Mihalik for Nowness.com
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
When I look in the mirror, I must answer to myself on this complex issue: when am I cashing in on nudity for web traffic? When am I exploiting the female body, as a person who believes that physicality is not a sin?
Women trust me to make the right decision, to balance their desire for respectability with an exploration of their sensuality. They write me that they have never felt treated so beautifully in their lives as they do on Anne of Carversville. It must be my woman’s touch . . . Or an ounce of ethics.
These images are just another commercialization of women’s bodies . . . A tendency thousands of years old. Mind you, AOC stands for liberalism on nudity, but preferably within a thinking-person’s context. When one purports to write a business article and features Candice Swanepoel nude as the big picture, the website is trolling for page views.
These images are just a gratuitous selling of sex for web traffic, and I don’t believe the strategy will carry the day long-term with an audience that is predominantly female. Alexa.com gender demographics for the two websites validate my point that they shouldn’t piss off the women.
Nudity Is Great When Properly Used
I am the first person to agree that women like and pursue editorials that feature nudity. This is why I’m fighting to put more sensuality in our lives, to open Pandora’s box on these issues.
Ironically, AOC has more gender balance in our readers, because guys actually try to understand my female perspective. More balanced use of nudity and more thoughtful guys relating to ideas and discourse. Interesting factoid.
Importance of Boundaries
Do bloggers have an ethical position of just how far we will go with nudity? Will Alexa.com rank determine the answer? As the competition heats up, will more naked bodies be the headlines — and not the insider content — of fashion blogging websites? Do we have any obligations to take a few moments, trying to search for a model’s name? Or is she just a naked body?
Granted, we all recognize Candice Swanepoel.
Thankfully, at least the name Lise Charmel (image below) is now spelled correctly. On Friday I thought the brand name — Lise Sharmel — didn’t matter at all. The purpose was page views of ti** and not a prestige lingerie brand, whose name could be verified in a 5 second Google search.
We all make mistakes and my own typos have caused private memos from readers asking “how can such a brilliant woman make so many typos”? Because I type 90 wpm, but it’s no excuse.
Nudity As Natural or Intellectual
I predict a sorting out between those of us who do feature nudity with class and to make an intellectual point, while abiding by search engine rules concerning the filtering of images — and those of us who cash in on nipples and naked bodies for page views.
The mantra of Anne of Carversville is ‘telling women’s stories from fashion to flogging’. The good guy/bad guy continuum is much tighter and more closely linked on these topics, than we want to admit — which is why strong support among male readers thrills me.
Most open-minded women want to be honored in our physicality, and not used for purely commercial purposes.
Perhaps the sensitivity tide will rise if we protest against our own kind? Or all we all just pornographers at heart, and let people like me get off our high horses?
To be continued . . . Anne

This is your chance to dress up, have fun and get special items that have saved money on the back of the jewelry box.

silver jewelry care tips

Since the prices of platinum and gold are very high there are many who have turned to buying sterling silver jewelry. Silver is the most white metal and the whiteness of silver even exceeds that of rhodium or platinum. This is the reason why a silver surface that is flat and polished resembles a perfect mirror. The only problem with silver is that it gets tarnished.

This is because the molecules of silver on its surface combine with oxygen and the result is the formation of silver oxide that is blackish in color. This is a big contrast with the whitish appearance of silver. That is why when making a mirror; the silver is usually covered using glass. Glass is used to block oxygen and this prevents tarnishing. Since it is not possible to buy silver jewelry that is coated with glass, it will tarnish after some time.

There is some silver jewelry that is plated using rhodium to prevent the tarnishing. This kind of silver should not be polished as this will remove the rhodium plating. Although rhodium is in the platinum group of metals, it does not have a whitish appearance as silver does, so it is at times an advantage to acquire silver jewelry that is in its natural state. When buying silver jewelry from a store, it is important to ask whether the piece is coated with rhodium so that it is clear about how it should be cleaned.

There is some silver jewelry that does not need to be polished regularly because tarnishing is prevented by the skin oils and frequent washing. This means that jewelry that is worn close to the skin like a chain, a ring or cross tends to remain untarnished. The tarnishing only occurs when the jewelry is exposed to harsh chemicals that increase the rate of oxidation.

A good illustration is when someone who is wearing a silver cross on the neck swims in a pool that has chlorinated water, the jewelry will quickly turn black. Swimming in a pool that draws water from a spring or a lake does not tarnish the sterling silver jewelry. Silver is highly reactive and it reacts when it gets into contact with oxygen, chlorine or sulfur.

The reaction leads to formation of compounds that are blackish. Those who use water that has a high content of sulfur or has traces of chlorine will notice that their silver jewelry will keep tarnishing. The same thing happens if the person wearing the jewel has chemicals in the skin oil due to diet or body chemistry

The search for sea glass

Bill Winkler of Ocean View holds a rare piece of
1950s Schlitz bottle bottom to a light that is a
dark royal ruby red.He is a collector of sea glass
found on Delaware beaches that is for sale and
displayed at his Treasure Quest Shoppe at 101 Atlantic Ave.
in Ocean View. / CHUCK SNYDER/THE DAILY TIMES
OCEAN VIEW -- When combing the beach with his metal detector, Bill Winkler oftentimes comes across sea glass, and his most interesting pieces are on display in his shop, Treasure Quest.
"I've got pounds of it," he said.
The Delmarva coast's wealth of shipwrecks -- more than 10,000 according to Don Shomette, a nautical historian who drafted the Shipwrecks of Delmarva map for National Geographic -- provides an equally wealthy load of sea glass and other artifacts. However, as those treasures are picked through and manufacturers abandon glass for plastic, some collectors say sea glass, glass found along beaches that has been smoothed over by sand and waves, could someday become a thing of the past.
Michele Buckler, owner of Sand N Stones in Lewes, started collecting sea glass in the 1970s and said increased recycling, beach replenishment and a heightened interest in the hobby has made pieces harder to find.
"It possibly may become one of those rare, rare treasures," she said. "When I started out, sea glass was all over the place. Now it's difficult to find one or two pieces a day, and I don't always find it when I go out."
Buckler, who sells jewelry made from sea glass, is one of more than 40 vendors in this weekend's Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival.
Judith HeartSong, an artist from Washington, D.C., who searches Delaware's beaches for sea glass, said most of her findings are pieces of green glass from old Coke bottles -- an indication that time is catching up with collectors.
Kerry Tressler, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola, said the company began using plastic bottles in 1978.
"The key driver for the packaging ultimately comes down to consumer need and behavior," she said.
Tressler added that Coca-Cola hasn't completely abandoned glass packaging.
"In fact, glass packaging delivers 13 percent of our global volume, which is about as much as in cans," she said. "In North America, we bottle and sell Coca-Cola, as well as Diet Coke and Sprite, in 8-ounce glass bottles."
HeartSong, who has been collecting for more than 30 years, said she also finds pieces of old, brown Clorox bottles, which are "a really terrific dark, olivey shade of glass."
She added that she and her partner have "secret beaches" in Delaware, whose locations she would never divulge.
Buckler also said she doesn't share her "hot spots" with others.
"You don't tell people about your personal spots because it's like treasure," she said. "If you tell one person, they tell one person and the next time you want to go out there, it's totally picked over."
However, she added, the beach is always changing and each time a wave crashes, something new is brought to shore.
"It depends on the different tides and what the sea glass gods, as I like to call them, decide to release," she said. "Some days are better than others."
Winter and fall are ideal for sea glass hunting, Buckler said, because the storms and tides are stronger. Also, there are fewer people on the beach picking up glass.
HeartSong, who uses sea glass in her multi-media pieces, said she plans a trip to the beach every time a nor'easter passes through.
"Every time a storm comes through you find more glass because everything has been stirred up," she said.
When searching for sea glass, Buckler said most people hunch over and look straight down, but that only gives them a small point of view.
"If you stand up and look beyond, you have a much wider stance," she said. "And a lot of times the light hits the glass, so that gives you a tip."
HeartSong said it's best to search without sunglasses.
"That changes the color (of the pieces)," she said.
As far as the value of sea glass goes, HeartSong said the watery and cobalt blues and teal greens are rare, but yellow and red pieces are the hardest to find.
"But the real value is in the fact that I found (the glass) on a beautiful day, in a beautiful place that I love," she said.

Glamour girls turn out in force for Ladies Day

WITH high fashion, spectacular fascinators and free-flowing pink champagne, Musselburgh Ladies Day gave Ascot a run for its money as thousands turned out for the glamorous racing event.
The sixth annual Ladies Day drew in crowds of more than 7500 who flocked to the famous East Lothian racecourse.

Those who managed to secure a ticket before they sold out more than two months ago were spared a repeat of the recent bad weather, with only a few light showers to rain on their parade.

With not a tweed jacket or flat boot in sight, most ladies opted for vertiginous heels, colourful cocktail dresses and sharp trouser suits.

More than a few attempted to outdo Princess Beatrice's "unique sculptural celebratory headpiece", although few were as outlandish as the £81,000 item.

Among the highlights of the event was the crowning of the coveted Queen of Style - which came with a £3000 prize.

Nicola Martin, who last week was crowned the Evening News Face of Ladies Day, and made judge, gave the accolade to Claire Thomson, from Duddingston.

She dazzled audiences with her figure-hugging dress and pink fascinator.

Ms Martin, 40, who works for Royal Bank of Scotland, said the event was again a spectacular draw.

She said: "It's been a fantastic day. Apart from a few showers the weather held out and there was a great atmosphere in the air.

"Judging the entries was really hard, and there were a lot of glamorous ladies here.

"Some of the hats were quite spectacular.

"There were also a lot of well-dressed men for the King of Style contest.

"I'd say we gave Ascot a run for their money.

Munson-Williams exhibit spans 200 years of wedding fashion

“Wedded Perfection: Two Centuries of Wedding Gowns” will open on Sunday and will be on display until Sept. 18. The exhibit features 47 wedding gowns from 1740 to the present day, from traditional white gowns with a veil and train, to a black and gold gown with black angel wings.

The gowns come from the Cincinnati Art Museum which opened its own wedding dress exhibit in October to “rave reviews and record attendance,” according to Anna D’Ambrosio, assistant director and curator of decorative arts at MWPAI.

The museum has spent months preparing for the exhibit, including making room on the second floor gallery to incorporate the gowns. Two tractor-trailers transported the 47 mannequins that would be used for the dresses. Then crates boxed with the gowns arrived from the Cincinnati museum. D’Ambrosio said it’s been full-time work since fitting the mannequins into the gowns.

D’Ambrosio said wedding dresses throughout the centuries reflect the artistic and social influences on women at the time.

“With Kate and [Prince] William’s wedding, there were millions of comments about her dress,” said D’Ambrosio. “Wedding dresses really say a statement and something about the time they were made.”

Cynthia Amneus, the curator of fashion art and textiles at the Cincinnati Art Museum, collected the gowns for this exhibit. The oldest dress in the collection comes from 1740, a green damask dress that is exhibited along with some of the regular paintings on display at the museum.

“Munson-Williams does not have a fashion art gallery. But you can see how closely that fashion relates to the decorative arts,” said D’Ambrosio.

The exhibit is split up into several sections, including traditional bride, modern bride, alluring bride and bride in color.

“The traditional wedding dress is a tight, fitted bodice, a long train and veil. People think it’s what has been worn at weddings forever. That’s not the case,” said Amneus. She said the white wedding dress was popularized by Queen Victoria in the 19th century, “but white was worn before the Queen Victoria dress, and color has been worn after.”

Some of the traditional gowns come from the 1940s era.

“This is what the boys were fighting for. They were going to war, and coming home to their sweethearts and wanted a traditional wedding,” said Amneus.

Some dresses range into the extreme.

One dress, from 1967, was used as a piece of performance art. The dress isn’t a dress, but rather appears to look like a shredded top and shorts, with ropes attached to a large, massive bundle of fabric. Amneus said women were thinking “very differently” abut their role in society at the time. Women were more educated, more financially independent and more sexually active.

“For her, [marriage] might not be something she wants to engage in,” she said.

A red, couture wedding gown, found in the modern brides section, was made by Zac Posen for his sister Alexandra. The flowing, petal-like look to the dress recalls the field of poppies from “The Wizard of Oz,” a movie the siblings enjoyed as children.

Another dress was made entirely out of latex gloves. Another, has a more romantic, Gothic look with black and gold fabric and crystal-looking beads, with black angel wings on the back.

Another black dress, in the brides in color section, was chosen by the bride because it was a mournful time in her life. In 1924, the bride bought the gown the day of her wedding, which was a low-key affair because her sister had recently died of polio.

The exhibit on the second floor opens to the public on Sunday. Tickets are $10, or $5 for MWPAI members or students with ID. A special preview for members is being held today at 5:30 p.m.

The museum’s Gift Gallery will feature items at its gift shop connected to its Wedded Perfection exhibit. Items include made by six local artists, including Diana Youngs of Frankfort. Jewelry, scarves, purses and note cards with a wedding theme will be on sale. Also, they will sell the catalog compiled by Amneus for $35. Members will get a two percent discount. Note cards from the Cincinnati Art Museum will also be sold.
